Numbers 5-1

  5. Kirby's Adventure

I recently played through the 3D remake of Kirby's Adventure on the 3DS, and it reminded me that the game is filled with wonderfully catchy tunes. Kirby's second game was released at the tail end of the NES's life cycle which meant that developers were able to take advantage of everything the system had to offer. Everything from the graphics, to the animation, to the music was worked on until perfection. The game's soundtrack involved a wide range of fantastic music like the energetic theme for Green Greens, the snazzy Vegetable Valley, the bitter-sweet Butter Building, the ultra tense Final Boss Theme, and, my favorite, the somber theme to Grape Garden.

4. Super Mario World

Everything about Super Mario World just oozes perfection. It was the game that showed off all that the then brand new Super Nintendo had to offer. It took what was great about previous Mario games and added tons of other awesome stuff and crammed it into a huge world. The soundtrack is nothing but sheer excellence. The majority of the levels are actually different variations of the same theme, but they fit the atmosphere of each level perfectly. The best songs of the game revolve around that theme like the Ghost House, Underwater, and Castle themes. Other notable songs include the Forest of Illusion overworld theme, and Bowser's theme. The best out of all them is the Athletic theme, which is the central theme that the others stem from.

 3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles

When Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knukcles are combined, they create the pinnacle of all Sonic games. Originally conceived as a single game, the development became too ambitious and had to be split into two games to meet deadline schedules. These two games create an adventure that full of variety, well-paced, and features some of the best music heard in a video game. The most recognizable are Angel Island Zone, Carnival Night Zone, and Sky Sanctuary Zone. My favorites, though, are the lesser known songs like Marble Garden Zone, Launch Base Zone, and Hidden Palace Zone (or Lava Reef Zone Act 2). The best theme in the game is the brooding and ominous final boss theme.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The greatest Zelda soundtrack ever offers some of the greatest songs ever composed. Veteran video game composer Koji Kondo crafted a wonderful soundtrack in Ocarina of Time that delivers some of the most well-known songs in video game history. Songs like Zelda's Lullaby, Saria's Song, The Song of Time, Epona's Song, and the Song of Storms are all memorable classics. But it doesn't stop there. There are plenty of lesser known songs that are as equally magnificent as their more popular brethren. These include the Forest Temple theme, Zora's Domain, the Shadow Temple, and the Ganondorf Battle theme. But my favorite out of all of these is the theme for Gerudo Valley.

1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

What can you say about a game that compiles the best songs from the best games into one? Super Smash Bros. Brawl has my favorite video games soundtrack because it is essentially a greatest hits collection of all video game music. It covers a huge spectrum of games, from Mario to Sonic, Zelda to Fire Emblem, and Pokémon to Metal Gear. It has a song for any kind of fan. It features wonderful remixes of all of the classic songs as well as some of the originals. In addition to song from other games, it features its own fantastic list original music including Final Destination, Tabuu, and the magnificent opening theme.

So those are my favorite video game soudtracks. Honorable mentions include, in no particular order, Fallout 3, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow. If you want, let me know what your favorites are in the comments.
